2017 NatCroMo Blog Tour, March 21: Kathy Kelly

A-Glamping We Will Go: 5th Annual National Crochet Month Blog Tour

Welcome to Crochetville’s fifth annual National Crochet Month (NatCroMo) blog tour, taking place each day of March 2017. Join us for a month of virtual glamping (aka glamorous camping), as we visit crochet designers, crochet-friendly local yarn stores, and yarn companies, as well as offer some fun giveaways.

Today’s Posts: Kathy Kelly | Tove Fevang | Donna Knox | Cascade Yarns

Want to Chat about the Tour?

Part of the fun of glamping is the daily round-up around the campfire, chatting and stitching with friends. We hope you’ll join us in our NatCroMo Facebook group, where we’ll be sharing daily camping recipes, campfire songs about crochet, and so much more! We’d also love to hear about your favorite things you’ve discovered on the tour and see photos of your current crochet projects. You’re invited to join us daily for virtual cocktails/appetizers and dinner. (We’ll be sharing links to some fabulous recipes!)

Kathy Kelly, Crochet Bird

Kathy Kelly | Crochet Bird

Crochetville is very proud to have designer Kathy Kelly of Crochet Bird with us today, March 21, as one of the featured designers on our 2017 Designer Blog Tour in honor of National Crochet Month (NatCroMo). If you’d like to know even more about Kathy, check out our post from last year’s blog tour.

About Kathy:

As a teacher and writer, Kathy loves sharing the wonderful techniques, ideas, and projects she has found. Her crochet designs incorporate her love of color, her continuing experiments with technique, and her relationship with nature.

You can find Kathy’s crochet patterns on Ravelry, where she hangs out when she wants to get inspired. Her Ravelry name is vibeskat. Kathy’s blog can be found at crochetbird.wordpress.com.

Kathy is an active member of the Crochet Connection of Chicago chapter of the Crochet Guild of America. She teaches classes and private lessons in crochet techniques at local yarn shops. She will be teaching one day workshops April 1 & 2 at YarnCon in Chicago. Kathy is also a composer and jazz musician who can be heard playing vibes at various venues in the Chicago area.

Do you crochet in public? If so, when and where?

The Crochet Connection of Chicago CGOA chapter occasionally meets to crochet at the Panera in Lincoln Village in Chicago. It is always fun to talk to people who walk by and mention that they or their relatives or friends crochet too.

Do you have a special place at home where you crochet? Tell us about it.

At home I usually crochet at the dining room table with all of my patterns and tools spread about and a cat or two along to help keep me alert.

Share the story of your favorite thing you’ve ever crocheted or designed.

Kathy Kelly | Crochet Bird | Lively Infinity Scarf

The Lively Infinity Scarf is my favorite crocheted thing. I designed the pattern to teach reading crochet charts for a class at a local yarn store. This particular scarf is made with Noro Kiara yarn, and I love the colors in it. I wear it often. It keeps me warm and adds a pop of color to my wardrobe.

How do you decide what to name your patterns?

This is an interesting question because I have never really thought about where the names come from. I think I am inspired by nature, the colors used in the sample pattern, or the shape of the object. Often I pick a name that implies motion, such as Dancing Crocus, Whispering Flowers, Fooling Around.

Tell us about your most popular pattern.

Kathy Kelly | Crochet Bird | Whispering Flowers Infinity Scarf

The Whispering Flowers Infinity Scarf is one of my most popular patterns and was inspired by Japanese crochet patterns. I wanted a very open fabric that would suggest the cherry blossoms in spring. Tinkering with some stitch patterns I decided to subtract stitches and replace them with chains giving the piece a more open look and feel.

What is your favorite camping snack/meal/recipe?

Homemade nut mix. I combine almonds, walnuts, hazelnuts, raisins, dried cranberries. I add chocolate chips when the temperatures are low enough that they won’t melt. It’s great for a snack when you’re hiking.

Kathy’s Designs:

If you’re not familiar with my work already, I’d like to share three of my designs with you.

Kathy Kelly | Crochet Bird | TriTone Tunisian Cowl

1. TriTone Tunisian Cowl, $5.00

This cowl features a beautifully-textured Tunisian lace stitch. Worked in 3 colors, the cowl is worn doubled. This is appropriate for an adventurous beginner. If you have some experience with Tunisian crochet, you should be able to make this.

The cowl can be worked in DK or worsted weight yarn; instructions for both weights are included in the pattern. I used less than 50 grams of each color for the DK and worsted weight samples.

Kathy Kelly | Crochet Bird | Whispering Flowers

2. Whispering Flowers Infinity Scarf, $5.00

A light and lacy infinity scarf inspired by Japanese design, using one skein of fingering weight yarn. The finished scarf is very light weight, a perfect accessory for any season.
