Cheryl Dee’s Crochet Memories
Would you share with us one of your earliest memories of crochet?
When I was just a child, my great-grandmother, Ida, taught me how to crochet with a steel hook and crochet thread. She could make beautiful doilies and little starched cups and ruffled saucers out of pink thread. I was entranced and fell in love with crochet right from the start.
Would you share with us one of your memories of becoming a crochet designer?
In 2014, after I had retired from full-time work as an executive secretary, I published my first crochet pattern online. I was surprised and exhilarated that it was downloaded hundreds of times. So, I decided to get a little more serious about doing further designing and pattern writing.
From that time, I’ve published over 30 patterns via several online venues. I’ve enjoyed the social aspect of sharing my designs, especially having them tested and professionally edited. It’s very encouraging to see all the positive feedback from my customers.
I’ve recently been working on becoming a certified crochet instructor by the Craft Yarn Council. I’ve conducted several classes as part of my “internship” requirements. That has opened up a new aspect for me and gives me great pleasure as I meet people who are as excited as I am about crochet.
Would you share with us one of your most memorable experiences as a crochet designer?
About the same time as the movie “Frozen” came out, I designed a snowflake hexagon pattern. I named it “Arctic Whisper.” I set the price as FREE for its debut and was overwhelmed by the immense response. It was a real hit! I even had one middle school teacher tell me she shared the pattern with her students and helped them all crochet their own.

This pattern is free until March 31, 2020, to celebrate National Crochet Month. With this pattern, you will make a colorful square for throws, bags, blankets, afghans, pillows, etc.
If you like rainbows, this square radiates out from the flower center with 7 rounds. The 7 colors of the rainbow are red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue, and violet, but you can let your creativity “blossom” with any colors you choose. The optional final round looks nice in a contrasting color.
This written pattern contains two photo tutorials: 1) how to do the needle join, aka the invisible join, and 2) how to do the pointy picot.
Changing colors on every round works best if you employ the needle join. All your ends will be woven in as you go! Keep your yarn needle and scissors beside you as you work.
Other features of this pattern include: 1) turning the piece over after every round — on the outer rounds — to prevent the block from “swirling” and 2) joining in the corners to provide a seamless appearance.
Arctic Whisper Snowflake Hexagon 12-inch

About the pattern: A lacy crocheted hexagon, great for shawls, throws, pillow overlays, curtains, and afghans. This pattern uses U.S. terminology (with UK/AU/NZ equivalents in parentheses) in the detailed stitch instructions.
Updated pattern made available on 04/01/2017. This pattern is a remake of the original Arctic Whisper Snowflake Hexagon. It has been reworked to use a 5.0 mm hook, which yields a 12-inch hexagon, with 20 stitches per side to coordinate with my other snowflake hexagon patterns of the same size and stitch count.
The older pattern was worked with a 6.5 mm hook and yielded a larger hexagon. The updated pattern can still be done with the larger hook to yield a 14-15” hexagon, depending on the individual’s tension.
As with all my designs, this pattern has been fully tested and professionally edited.
Simple Tunisian Coaster

About the pattern: Great project for getting your feet wet with Tunisian crochet! These coasters are small enough that they can be worked with a regular crochet hook. A Tunisian crochet hook is not required.
The written pattern is 4 pages long, with charts/diagrams, text, and photos. There is also a related, 21-minute FREE video tutorial that shows the entire process from start to finish.
