NatCroMo 2014, March 22: Susan Heyn

NatCroMo2014b

The 2014 Designer Blog Tour in honor of National Crochet Month continues today with a visit to crochet designer Susan Heyn.

Susan has been crocheting since her mother taught her as a six year old sick in bed with chicken pox.  Her mother was left-handed too, and they spent many hours crocheting together throughout Susan’s childhood and beyond until her mother’s death in 1999.  Her mother was her first crochet teacher and was always encouraging.  Susan has a retail shop in the Ridgewood area of Queens, New York where she sells craft supplies, crochet, gift items and more.  Susan is also an AVON Rep.  She has been self-publishing her crochet patterns for about 2 years now and hopes to publish something in a magazine or with a yarn company someday.  Susan’s favorite things to crochet and design are holiday and home décor items. She sells her self-published patterns on Crochetville, Etsy, Ravelry, Craftsy, and on her website.

National Crochet Month Plans

Susan has a free square pattern that on her blog for March that will be part of a pattern set of 3 more flowers that can be combined with the plain square to create a tote bag or other project.  The flowers will be attached to the squares and could also be used separately as a lapel pin or magnet.

On CGOA:

Susan is an associate professional member of CGOA (Crochet Guild of America), and she has this to share about her CGOA experience:

I’m a new member of CGOA.  I plan to attend the conference in Manchester and look forward to networking with industry professionals  and hope to advance as a crochet designer.  I’m waiting to be assigned a mentor to help me achieve my goals.  I enjoy seeing everyone’s projects, the patterns that are available to members, and the magazine that is part of our membership. I’m also interested in the Crochet Masters program and hope to enroll in it later this year.
