New Free Crochet Pattern Floofy Boot Toppers

Floofy Boot Toppers with black boots

I’m happy to announce the release of my new free crochet pattern Floofy Boot Toppers. I wore these for the first time at the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair back in October and received constant compliments on them everywhere I went. I hope you’ll receive just as many compliments whether you’re wearing your boot toppers around town or giving them as gifts!

A FREE version of the pattern is provided in this post. The pattern is available on Ravelry for a small fee for those who prefer the convenience of a PDF pattern download.

Basic Pattern Information

About the Pattern: When I saw this yarn sitting on the shelf in my local yarn store, it simply screamed out at me that I must take it home and make it into a pair of “floofy” boot toppers. “Floofy” is my technical term for the thicker bouclé areas that appear from time to time in the length of yarn. I hope you have as much fun making and wearing these boot toppers as I’ve had!

Pattern Notes:

1. Comin Up Flowers is a bouclé yarn with bunched-up clumps or “floofs” of yarn occurring at intervals. Crochet as usual until you come right up against one of these floofs. Do not try to wrap the floof around your hook and crochet with it. Instead, bunch up the floof, hold it in place against the back side (right side) of your work (I use the fingers of the hand holding my hook), then continue to crochet as usual with the “normal” part of the yarn. This way, all the floof bits will be on the right side of your work.

2. You can customize this pattern to fit you perfectly.
a. Adjust the depth of the inner portion by adding or removing stitches from the row. The inner portion should be slightly smaller than the circumference of your calf and should gently stretch to fit comfortably. The topper does not need to fit tightly as it will be held in place over your boot when the top is folded over.
b. Adjust the circumference by adding or removing rows from the inner portion in multiples of 4.
c. Adjust the depth of the outer boot topper by adding or removing rows in any number you prefer.

3. Preventing Toppers from Riding Up: If your boots have a looser fit on top, you may notice that the inner ribbing rides up a bit throughout the day. To help the ribbing stay in place, thread a piece of ribbon or a length of crocheted chain through the ribbing and tie in place securely with a bow before folding the decorative part of the topper over the edge of the boot.
