Rebecca Velasquez, Featured Crochet Designer

You’ve arrived at the annual NatCroMo Blog Tour! What is that, you ask? It’s a virtual celebration of National Crochet Month with new blog content daily throughout March, including featured crochet designers, free patterns, discounts, giveaways, and more.

This year our theme is The Crochet Concert and we are celebrating music as creative inspiration. Each featured designer’s showcase will include an “Opening Act” (a quick or easy pattern); “Intermission” (the designer’s favorite crochet tools, yarn, or books); a “Showstopper” (an impressive or unique pattern); and “Designer’s Choice” (any pattern of the designer’s choice).

See all of this year’s tour here: NatCroMo Blog Tour 2021.

About Rebecca Velasquez

Our featured designer of the day is Rebecca Velasquez of RV designs. Be sure to visit her blog today to read her post celebrating National Crochet Month! You can find Rebecca’s patterns on her website, rebeccavelasquez.com, and on Etsy, LoveCrafts, Payhip, Makerist, and Ravelry.

Mom of 4 kiddos that went and grew up without asking and wife to my Mr. Wonderful. I live in Houston, Texas with my 2 dogs and cat, where I pretty much hang out in my studio all day drinking coffee, crocheting &/or knitting and hiding from the heat. Playing with yarn is equal parts daily meditation and job. My design work in both crochet and knit is as much of necessity to my being as it is a pleasure.

Rebecca’s Special for Our Readers

Rebecca will be releasing a new hat pattern, Clancy, on her blog – and the PDF download will be FREE for just one day! (Offer ends Saturday, March 27, 2021 @ 6:00pm CDT.)

Go here for the pattern: https://www.rebeccavelasquez.com/clancy/
You will need to keep reading through her blog post until you find the link to download it directly from her website. (The free download is not available on Ravelry, Etsy, etc.)

Rebecca’s Creative Inspiration

Is music a source of inspiration for your crochet creativity? Or do you listen to music while you crochet? If so, tell us about it. If not, what is something else that helps fuel your creative inspiration?

Typically, I listen to audiobooks while crocheting. But when it’s pattern writing time, the music comes on, with a caveat – no words. So it’s full orchestra classical or film scores.

Can you recommend one or two songs/pieces of music you find inspirational?

Hans Zimmer is *where its at*! Love his music. It is so emotional and some of the songs absolutely throw you into the world of the movie it came from.

Design Showcase: The Opening Act

Pattern name: Biel

Get the pattern: https://www.rebeccavelasquez.com/biel-sweater/

About the pattern: This sweater is perfect for spring. The suggested yarn is a lightweight chainette that works amazingly well with the linked dc stitching, which is solid enough to not require an undershirt for the warmer days that are here (and coming!).

Intermission

Hands down, my favorite hooks are Tulip Etimo. They check all the boxes for me. The smoothness of the head/hook is right, the cushioned grip is a nice size with a slight thumb indent, the weight feels good. Also, and perhaps most important (not at all), they’re pretty.

Design Showcase: The Showstopper

Pattern name: Ahsoka

Get the pattern: https://www.rebeccavelasquez.com/ahsoka/

About the pattern: Ahsoka is a great layering piece. The upper body is made in an intricate ‘floral’ design with wide, flowing sleeves while the lower body is stitched in a solid faux ribbing, for the look without being overly fitted.

Designer’s Choice

Pattern name: Shirl

Get the pattern: https://www.rebeccavelasquez.com/shirltop/

About the pattern: Shirl is my top of the moment. I wore it all the time last summer and it has already made its way to the ‘favorites’ pile for spring. It is a very quick make and so versatile to wear. Dress it up or down, V in front or back… definitely going into the vacation bag!

Things to come…

As we begin to peek out into the world again, I am looking forward to getting back to teaching at my LYS. I love the personal connections and relationships I get to build as we spend time in a classroom all working toward the same goal.
